Elton John-Jake Shears Musical ‘Tammy Faye’ Heading To Broadway In 2024-25 Season

Tammy Faye, the Olivier-nominated Elton John-Jake Shears-James Graham musical about ’80s-era televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, will premiere on Broadway during the 2024-25 Season.

The musical will be staged at an as-yet-unannounced Nederlander Theatre. Venue, production dates and casting will be announced at a later date.

The move of the Almeida Theatre production to Broadway was announced today by producers Rocket Stage, Greene Light Stage, and James L. Nederlander.

Tammy Faye features music by John, lyrics by Scissor Sisters’ Shears and book by Ink playwright Graham. Rupert Goold, who directed Graham’s Ink, will direct Tammy Faye, and Lynne Page will choreograph.

Also on the Broadway creative team: Tom Deering (music supervision, arrangements and additional music); Deering and Mark Dickman (orchestrations); Bunny Christie (scenic design); Katrina Lindsay (costume design); Neil Austin (lighting design); Bobby Aitken (sound design); and Finn Ross (video design).

Tammy Faye had its world premiere at London’s Almeida Theatre in Fall 2022, where it was nominated for four Olivier Awards including Best Musical.

The official synopsis: “From a studio in South Carolina, Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker revolutionized religion. Preaching to millions 24 hours a day, Tammy just wants to put the fun back into faith. But a new wave of ministers wants you not to just feel God in your heart, but in your homes, in your schools, and in the law too.”

Tammy Faye is the latest Elton John theater work following The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida; Billy Elliot the Musical; and the upcoming The Devil Wears Prada. Shears’ first musical, Tales of the City, went into production at the American Conservatory Theater in 2010, and he starred as Charlie Price in Kinky Boots on Broadway. He is currently making his West End debut as the Emcee in the acclaimed revival of Cabaret.

Graham’s theater work includes Dear England, Ink, Best of Enemies and more. TV credits include Sherwood; Quiz; Brexit: The Uncivil War; and Coalition.
