Sir Elton John is at home and resting after several days of treatment for a rare and dangerous infection.

The singer's spokesperson confirmed on Monday (April 24) that all of his April and May performances of his 'Million Dollar Piano' stage show in Las Vegas have been cancelled as he recuperates.

Sir Elton's representative also explained that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee had contracted a "harmful and unusual bacterial infection" on a recent visit to South America.

"During his return flight home from Santiago, Chile, he became violently ill. Upon returning to the UK, Elton's doctors admitted him to hospital, where he underwent immediate treatment to remove the infection," Sir Elton's spokesperson told People.

"After spending two nights in intensive care followed by an extended stay in hospital, Elton was released from hospital on Saturday, April 22 and is now comfortably resting at home per doctor's advice. Infections of this nature are rare and potentially deadly. Thankfully, Elton's medical team identified this quickly and treated it successfully. He is expected to make a full and complete recovery."

While the rock star will most likely be on his feet in time for his return to the UK at the Twickenham Stoop in London on June 3, he's been forced to shelve his May 6 date at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, California.

"I am so fortunate to have the most incredible and loyal fans and apologise for disappointing them," John said on Monday. "I am extremely grateful to the medical team for their excellence in looking after me so well."

Digital Spy has reached out to Sir Elton's representative for more information.

Sir Elton had been scheduled to headline at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace for two nights this week and three nights in early May as part of his multi-year concert residency in Las Vegas.

This period of rough health comes during a very busy time for the musician, who is currently working on a Broadway adaptation of Devil Wears Prada as well as a collaboration with Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sir Tim Rice on a film musical version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

He'll also play a slightly heightened version of himself opposite Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Julianne Moore and Taron Egerton in the spy comedy Kingsman: The Golden Circle, out this autumn.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery, Sir Elton.
