Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has revealed that she turned down the lead role in Fifty Shades of Grey because she was tired of being asked about performing nude scenes.
Best known for playing Daenerys Tarragon, who did appear naked in Game of Thrones, Clarke explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she didn’t want to be “pigeonholed for life” on account of doing a “minimal amount” of onscreen nudity “a long time ago.”
Despite complimenting the Fifty Shades director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, she explained that, after appearing naked on Game of Thrones back in 2011, “it is the only question that I ever get asked because I am a woman.”
She continued, “it’s annoying as hell and I’m sick and tired of it because I did it for the character – I didn’t do it so some guy could check out my tits, for God’s sake. So, that [Fifty Shades] coming up, I was like, ‘I can’t’.”
Describing Taylor-Johnson’s film, which came out in 2015, Clarke said “the entire thing is about sensuality and sex and being naked and all of that stuff.”
She recounted her concern that if she took the part of Anastasia Steele she wouldn’t be able to refuse to answer questions about performing naked.
The role later went to Dakota Johnson, who has now starred in three movies for the franchise: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.
