Forbes has now revealed the highest-paid actor over the past 12 months, and it'll be no surprise to learn the gender pay gap still exists.

Emma Stone overtook Jennifer Lawrence as the highest-paid actress with a haul of $26 million from June 1, 2016 to June 1, 2017, according to Forbes' calculations. But that only makes her the 15th highest-paid star overall.

Mark Wahlberg, the new highest-paid actor, earned more than 2.5 times that of Stone with $68m and, what's more, only three actresses made more than $20m over the past 12 months, compared to 16 actors crossing that mark.

Overall, the top 10 highest-paid actors banked $488.5m combined, almost three times that of the $172.5m combined total of the 10 highest-paid actresses.

1. Mark Wahlberg, $68 million

2. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, $65 million

3. Vin Diesel, $54.5 million

4. Adam Sandler, $50.5 million

5. Jackie Chan, $49 million

6. Robert Downey, Jr., $48 million

7. Tom Cruise, $43 million

8. Shah Rukh Khan, $38 million

9. Salman Khan, $37 million

10. Akshay Kumar, $35.5 million

11. Chris Hemsworth, $31.5 million

12. Tom Hanks, $31 million

13. Samuel L. Jackson, $30.5 million

14. Ryan Gosling, $29 million

15. Emma Stone, $26 million

It's argued that the large gap is down to the fact that there are simply fewer female roles available in the high-paying superhero movies and other blockbusters, especially as they lead to sequels that often sees the lead stars paid more.

For example, Wahlberg's success over the past 12 months has been put down to his roles in Transformers: The Last Knight and upcoming comedy sequel Daddy's Home 2.

On the combined list of top earners, Melissa McCarthy – the fourth highest-paid actress – only ties in 21st with Marvel star Chris Evans – who himself only ranks as the 18th highest-paid actor.
