Emma Stone has said the shock Oscars mix-up was 'one of the most horrible moments of her life'.

The 28-year-old actress joined her fellow La La Land co-stars on stage to pick up the Best Picture gong at Sunday night's ceremony, only to be told midway through acceptance speeches that Barry Jenkins' Moonlight was the real winner.

Stone - who was named Best Actress for her role in the Damien Chazelle musical - told the Daily Mail that the mistake was "one of the most horrible moments of my life".

She added: "Wow! It was just so horrible."

Actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed the wrong card ahead of announcing the winning film.

Beatty hesitated before handing the card to Dunaway who read out "La La Land". However the card was for the Best Actress in a Leading Role.

After the commotion Beatty returned to the microphone and said: "I'll tell you what happened. I opened the envelope and it said 'Emma Stone La La Land' that's why I took such a long look at Faye and then you. I wasn't trying to be funny. This is Moonlight, Best Picture."

Pricewaterhouse Coopers - the accountancy firm that oversees the counting of the Oscars ballots - has 'sincerely apologised' for the blunder which they put down to "human error".

PwC said in a statement: "We sincerely apologise to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture.

"The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.

"There are two sets of briefcases at the side of the stage at the ceremony, which each contain the evening's results, for security purposes."

Stone's co-star Ryan Gosling entertained viewers with his reaction to the epic gaffe as he was seen sniggering awkwardly on stage.
