You may have noticed that London is brimming with even more stylish film stars than usual. That's because the world's finest actors and actresses have descended on the capital for the annual BFI London Film Festival.

Filled with a packed schedule of premieres, glamorous galas and talks, the festival attracts the crème de la crème of screen stars each year and, although the event's main focus is on film, fashion also plays a part.

2018 has been a particularly star-studded year, which has also been reflected in the elevated style stakes seen on the red carpet.

On Thursday evening Emma Stone hit the red carpet at the premiere of The Favourite in a backless metallic number by Louis Vuitton, accessorised with a star adorned hairpiece and burgundy lipstick.

'Glitz and glamour' has definitely been the unofficial dress code for the festival this year and glimmering floor length gowns have been the biggest red carpet trend.

Rachel Weisz stunned in a deep purple sequin dress by Alexander McQueen, Keira Knightley put on an ethereal display in a embellished Chanel frock and Dakota Johnson dazzled in a strapless design by Gucci.

In contrast, androgynous suits have also been a hit.

Tilda Swinton rocked her usual signature two-piece, meanwhile Nicole Kidman ditched a dress in favour of a sleek Armani Prive suit paired with a hot pink shirt for the premiere of Destroyer.

Finally, let's not forget about the dapper gents.

Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor, Joe Alwyn and Steve Carell all donned their best designer suits for their moment in front of the photographer's pen, but it was 22-year-old Timothée Chalamet who stole the show.

The Call Me By Your Name star braved a statement suit by Alexander McQueen, which came complete with a vibrant floral motif which he pulled off like a pro.
