Former Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden has offered an update after he announced that he was having surgery this week. The actor took to social media earlier this week as he posted about being in hospital and going under the knife.

Matthew, known for having played David Metcalfe in the ITV soap from 2006 until his departure last year, announced to his followers that he was awaiting surgery on one of his knees. Alongside a photo that appeared to show him lying in a hospital bed, the 43-year-old wrote: "Ready to go down for surgery on my knee."

He didn't provide any further details about his health or what the surgery was, however, until after the procedure which he said went well. In a later update, four hours after speaking about the surgery, Matthew shared a photo of his leg bandaged up whilst lying in a hospital bed.

He wrote: "All done!" and used RUN DMC and Aerosmith's collaborative version of the song Walk This Way in the post. But he later gave further details about the procedure, with him telling his followers in a subsequent post: "Repair to menuscus, patella tendon and cartilage damage all done. Took 2 hours instead of the 45 mins they initially thought!"

He also expressed gratitude over the NHS, sharing that he had received the treatment at a hospital in Harrogate. He commented: "Can't tell you how amazing everything and everyone was at Harrogate District Hospital. Thank you."

Following concern from his fans and followers, Matthew went on to share a photo of himself standing aided by crutches in what appeared to be a hospital entrance. He could be seen wearing a grey hoodie and matching shorts, with his bandaged leg visible in the photo.

Alongside the snap, Matthew said: "All fixed!" He went on to suggest that he was being supported, writing in the post on Instagram with Coldplay track 'Fix You' in the background: "Thanks [Heather] for picking me up and playing nurse this week," seemingly referring to personal trainer Heather Scott-Martin who he has been romantically linked to.

Matthew, who went on to star in the stage musical Elf following his departure from Emmerdale, announced his split from wife Charley Webb back in November after rumours about their relationship.

In a statement at the time, Charley shared: "It is with love and respect that Matthew and I have decided to separate. We remain friends and our priority is the love for our children. For their sake we would appreciate privacy at this time."

The former couple met on Emmerdale where Charley played Debbie Dingle and Matthew played David Metcalfe. The pair share three sons, Buster, 14, Bowie, eight, and Ace, four.
