The ITV soap recently revealed that Leyla and Suzy (Roxy Shahidi) have been taking drugs together, which nobody else in the village currently knows.

In next week's episodes, though, the story takes a turn when Suzy starts to reconsider her recent behaviour, and Martelle has opened up about why Suzy ultimately makes this decision.

When asked if her character is serious about giving up the drugs, Martelle replied: "She's very serious, she's had enough of the party life and seen that the grass is greener on the other side. I think she just wants peace and tranquillity now and that is what she sees in Vanessa."

She continued: "She's falling quite hard for Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) and that's to her surprise as well, so she does have quite a bit of a soft spot and really wants to make things work, hence giving up the bad stuff.

"Michelle and I are really enjoying the storyline, and I love working with Roxy as well, I enjoy working with both of them."

As viewers will see next week, Leyla tells Vanessa that Suzy used to know Moira's late daughter Holly, who died from a drug overdose in 2016. Shocked by Suzy's lies, Vanessa questions their relationship which results in Suzy deciding that Vanessa would be better off without her.

Martelle opened up about why Suzy believes this, explaining that she's scared she's going "to mess things up" and lead Vanessa down the wrong path with her. However, Vanessa begs Suzy stay, to which Martelle revealed that while Suzy agrees, she "decides that she wants to give up drugs and her party lifestyle and live a cleaner life".

"So, she says to Leyla, I'm not doing drugs anymore and I want to make things work with Vanessa, I'm giving it up and you should too," she added.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
