Emmerdale won the ratings war against EastEnders spin-off Kat and Alfie: Redwater last night (May 25) as the two shows went head to head for the first time.

As of this week, Kat and Alfie: Redwater is facing a regular clash against Emmerdale's 8pm Thursday edition, meaning the new BBC drama is pitted against the ITV soap for 30 minutes.

And it was Emmerdale who appears to have triumphed as the battle began, bringing in 4.6 million viewers for its second episode (and 4.9 for its first), compared to Redwater's 2.7 million.

Redwater drew in a decent 4.19 million for its debut last Thursday, but the viewing figures seemed to have dropped quite significantly this week, with Emmerdale's clash bound to be denting the numbers.

Interestingly, Thursday's EastEnders episode was the most watched show all evening – with 5.1 million viewers tuning in. But unlike last week, it appears that many watchers didn't stay with the BBC to catch the show's spin-off Redwater straightafter.

This is bound to raise questions of whether Redwater is in the wrong slot going up against Emmerdale, given that the clash is bound to leave soap fans with divided loyalties over which one to watch live.

Of course, yesterday's glorious UK weather is likely to have dented audience figures for all shows, with many people likely to be making the most of the the rare chance of an evening outside instead.

Let's also not forget that these ratings are purely based on the amount of viewers watching the shows as they air live on TV, and doesn't take into account iPlayer catch-up figures – which are likely to boost numbers.

Kat and Alfie: Redwater airs Thursdays at 8pm on BBC One, while Emmerdale continues tonight (May 26) at 7pm on ITV.
