Emmerdale's Charles Anderson to make a mysterious prison visit

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's Charles Anderson will take a mysterious trip to prison in upcoming scenes.

After receiving a curious phone call, Charles reluctantly agrees to assist his unyielding mother Claudette in cleaning the church.

However, Charles is obviously distracted by whatever the unknown caller said to him, so Claudette makes an effort to get his attention by criticising his sermons.

Claudette is upset when a frustrated Charles tells her that she can go somewhere else if all she plans to do is critique him – but it's obvious that he is troubled by something deeper.

Later on, Charles is filled with dread as he makes his way towards the prison, where he's met by a man.

Clearly shaken, Charles orders the man to stay away from him and his family. But who is he, and what does he want?

Kevin Mathurin, who plays Charles, recently teased that viewers can expect to see a "darker side" to the village vicar as his shady past catches up with him.

"Our executive producer Jane Hudson pulled me aside in the middle of last year. There were talks then about Charles' past and who might appear," he explained. "Jane was always saying that she wants to bring out a darker side to the character of Charles. She felt there was a darker side there that she really wanted the viewers to see.

"It was good to build the family and build up some stories and situations where sometimes the job doesn't come first for Charles – being a man comes first."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
