Former Hollyoaks star Emmett J Scanlan has signed on for a brand new thriller heading to Netflix. Who needs Cheshire, eh?

The Brendan Brady favourite will be joining a prestigious cast, featuring Dexter's Michael C Hall and Sherlock's Amanda Abbington alongside fellow new addition, Hustle's Marc Warren.

Filming has officially kicked off in Manchester for the new series, called Safe, which was ordered by Netflix and the French CANAL+ Group.

Award-winning writer Danny Brocklehurst (Ordinary Lies, The Driver, Shameless) will be penning the eight-part series, which is expected to debut next year.

Emmett will be playing Amanda's on-screen husband, Josh, in the thriller – and it's a pretty heavy role by the sounds of things.

The estranged husband of detective sergeant Sophie, Josh is "desperately clinging on to his youth", letting his family down as he does so.

Joking that his new role is thanks to the "luck of the Irish", Emmett said: "To get to tell stories like this one, and to be surrounded by such talented people, it almost feels like I've gate-crashed a party."

Safe will follow Tom (Hall), a paediatric surgeon as he raises his two teenage daughters alone, until a murder and disappearance – and the secrets they uncover – shock the community.

You'll be able to catch Emmett in Safe, when it streams globally on Netflix outside of France in 2018.
