Sharon Gless is gearing up to swap Hollywood for Holby as the actress is joining the cast of Casualty when the series returns later this year.

The soap may have aired the last in its series last night, but viewers have already been given something to look forward to in the form of the multi-Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress' arrival.

Cagney & Lacey star Sharon Gless will join the cast of Casualty for an episode in the upcoming series as Zsa Zsa Harper-Jenkinson, described as a "maestro of surgery" and a former mentor to Dylan (William Beck).

Speaking of her guest role, Sharon Gless shared her excitement at taking part in a British TV series.

"I'm a rabid Anglophile," she said. "Some of our finest American TV is British. Zsa Zsa is a wonderful character and I hope you all enjoy her too."

Gless is best known for her role as Christine Cagney in Cagney & Lacey, which followed the adventures of two kick-ass female police officers in New York City (ahead of its time, we know).

In fact, there's even a new Cagney and Lacey in the latest NYPD series Brooklyn 99:

After Cagney & Lacey ended in 1988, Gless went on to enjoy massive success in television, landing recurring roles in hit US dramas such as Burn Notice, Nip / Tuck, not to mention the US adaptation of Queer as Folk.

Gless has recently finished filming the most recent TV adaptation of The Exorcist and has been nominated for an astounding 11 Emmys in total, so we dare say that Casualty is extremely lucky to have her on board.

Casualty will return to BBC One this Autumn.
