Empty shop next to KFC could be new home for betting shop

An empty shop next to a town centre KFC could become a betting shop. Ladbrokes is looking to move 200 metres to a new home in Cheltenham.

Its existing bookies is in Winchcombe Street and the betting shop chain wants to move to nearby Pittville Street, next to the KFC fast-food restaurant, in the town centre. It wants to make the move ahead of major redevelopment work in the Winchcombe Street area.

The new location, at 10-12 Pittville Street, used to be home to Travelbag, which moved out in February. This trader has now relocated to a more prominent unit on The Promenade.

A planning application has been submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council on behalf of Ladbrokes by Elias Topping. It said in a planning statement: "If consent is granted the proposal will not increase the number of non-retail or betting office uses in the town centre. The closest betting office to the application site is the Ladbrokes existing betting office at 11-19 Winchcombe Street, which will be relocated if consent is granted for this proposal.

"The application will not therefore lead to any clustering of betting offices or dominance of the use within he town centre. The applicant has a long history of trading from this part of the town centre having been located at 11-19 Winchcombe Street since 2002. The proposal will enable a successful business to modernise and continue to trade from a similar location and facilitate the implementation of an enhanced shopfront with a high quality of design (to be provided under a separate application)."
