Based on the best-selling biography by Trent Dalton, the series is set in 1980s Australia and follows Eli, a young boy faced with tough problems including his mother who lives with addiction, drug dealing step-father and more.

Eli gets a job at the paper
After Alex Bermuda, Eli's prison pen pal, unexpectedly arrives and protects the Bell family from Frankie's violent ex-boyfriend, Teddy, Alex gifts Eli a tape recorder so he can begin his journalism career.
Eli records Alex's life story and takes it to a local newspaper editor, who offers the aspiring journalist a small job where he begins working alongside Caitlyn.
Meanwhile, Gus and Shelley are nominated as Queensland Champions and Eli is assigned to write about the awards, giving him the chance to research the host, Tytus Broz, who is the former boss of his missing stepdad, Lyle.
Eli and Caitlyn meet with Tytus
Eli tells Caitlyn about his past, including Lyle's disappearance and Ivan Kroll attacking him, and they begin researching Tytus together. She goes to detective Tim Cotton, who says he doesn't know anything but later informs Ivan who kills Tim.
Eli and Caitlyn meet with Raymond Leary who tells them about his work for Tytus and soon, Tytus personally requests for Eli to interview him to which he and Caitlyn (posing as a photographer) go to his house on the day of the Queensland Champions awards.
Meanwhile, Gus has a vision about a potential knife attack that could involve Eli and at Tytus's home, he confronts Eli about knowing exactly who they are and why they're really there.
Driving away, Caitlyn tells Eli that they should search Tytus' home when he leaves for the ceremony, but Tytus spots the pair and calls Ivan with an order to kill them.
Eli finds Lyle dead
As Eli and Caitlyn search Tytus' property, they discover that he is keeping dead bodies and body parts in a bunker and soon, Eli sees the head of his stepdad, Lyle, proving that he didn't just disappear.
Caitlyn calls the police but soon, Ivan enters and tries to shoot them. She attacks him, they trap him in the bunker and escape but Ivan follows them.
Meanwhile, Tytus takes the stage at the awards ceremony, where Gus and Frankie are waiting for Eli, and the police arrive at Tytus' property.
Tytus is arrested and Ivan attacks Eli
At the ceremony, Eli storms the stage with Lyle's decapitated head in his hand and exposes Tytus' crimes, to which the police arrest Tytus. But, Ivan arrives and stabs Eli and his father, Robert.
Eli tries to escape but Ivan follows him, killing and attacking anyone in his way. He almost kills Eli but Gus appears and pushes Ivan out of the window of the grand building, killing him instantly. But, Eli soon passes out in Gus' arms.
Eli and Robert survive
Soon, we see Eli in a hospital bed with Caitlyn at his side. She tells him that his dad, Robert, survived and they almost kiss, to which Robert, Frankie, Gus and Shelley enter the room and the family reunite.
Then, we see Eli, Gus, Frankie and Robert enjoying a family dinner at home, with Eli writing the manuscript for his book, Boy Swallows Universe.
