England Beaten In Final Twenty20 Warm-up

England endured another warm-up defeat ahead of the ICC World Twenty20, going down by 20 runs to India at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.

Virat Kohli hit an unbeaten 74 and Suresh Raina made 54 as India - winners of the inaugural event back in 2007 - made 178-4 after being put into bat by stand-in England captain Eoin Morgan.

England's reply was given a lively start thanks to a plethora of boundaries from Michael Lumb (36), yet once again they struggled to get after the spinners.

Ravichandran Ashwin took 1-20 from his four overs while Raina completed a fine all-round display with 1-23, Lumb the left-armer's victim when he was stumped by India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Moeen Ali top-scored with 46 and Jos Buttler made 30 but the innings finished with England comfortably short of their target at 158-6.

At least there was some good news concerning the fitness of skipper Stuart Broad; the seamer was able to bowl two overs ahead of his side's tournament opener against New Zealand on Saturday.

Broad was the sixth bowler used by Morgan, with Moeen asked to take the first over. He did a good job of it too, conceding just four runs, but was then not called upon again.

India had stuttered to 39-3 at one stage, Yuvraj Singh caught behind off the bowling of Chris Jordan for one to join openers Rohit Sharma (five) and Shikhar Dhawan (14) back in the pavilion.

However Kohli and Raina combined in a fourth-wicket stand worth 81 during which Broad sent down 12 deliveries at a cost of 14 runs, his second over giving up just four singles.

The tempo of the innings was lifted by India on the introduction of Stephen Parry. The Lancashire left-arm spinner was hit for back-to-back boundaries by Kohli then after a single followed, was launched into the spectators at deep mid-wicket for six by the left-handed Raina.

Ravi Bopara also suffered at the hands of the duo, though he did end Raina's fun when Jordan took an excellent catch diving forwards out at deep square leg. Dhoni came in to make 21 not out, allowing him to watch closely as Kohli took Tim Bresnan for three fours in the final over.

Just as England's seamers proved expensive so too did India's, with Lumb in particular enjoying the extra pace on the ball. He hit half-a-dozen boundaries and also cleared the rope once, scattering his team-mates in the dug-out with a lofted square drive that went all the way.

Ashwin, who removed Morgan for 16, and Raina successfully applied the brakes and the left-arm spin of Ravindra Jadeja accounted for Moeen and Buttler.

At least it was an improvement on England's last outing against West Indies 24 hours earlier. Then they had laboured to 131-7 from their 20 overs and were comfortably beaten by the reigning champions.
