England cricketer pulls off miraculous stop despite losing his artificial leg

The hindrance of losing a leg mid-game did not stop English cricketer Liam Thomas from pulling off a miraculous piece of fielding last week.

The young cricketer was fielding in the deep during England Physical Disabilities' Twenty20 match with Pakistan.

Fielding at deep mid-wicket, Thomas was scrambled along the boundary to stop a firmly struck sweep shot from the Pakistan batsman.

Thomas dived to successfully prevent the ball from going for four, inadvertently losing his prosthetic leg in the process.

"It just happened, really. I was sprinting for the ball, put my hand out, hit the deck hard and the next thing I know I stood up and had no leg," Thomas said.

"I didn't know whether to grab the leg or get the ball in. I decided to go for the ball."

Thomas' efforts ultimately proved to be in vain as Pakistan went on to register a three wicket victory.

England succumbed to Pakistan in the final of the ICC Dubai Academy Invitational tournament after beating Bangladesh by six wickets.

England captain Iain Nairn hailed the positive effect the tournament would have for the image of disabled sport.

"This tournament has been a fantastic advert for disability cricket. All three sides have improved considerably," told the EB website.

"We got off to a good start and then let them back into the game with a few wickets in the middle overs.

"We had a reasonable finish and thought that 137 was competitive. It’s not easy batting on such a big pitch – there was a much lower boundary count today.

"Pakistan got off to a flyer. It got to the point where they only needed 50 but we kept tugging them back and made them work very hard for the win," he said.
