Captain Eoin Morgan has been named in England’s ODI squads to face Scotland in one ODI and Australia in a five-match series next month despite a finger injury suffered on Sunday.

Morgan’s vice-captain, Jos Buttler, will be rested from the Scotland match on June 10 after his recent recall to the Test side and IPL exploits. The ECB said this decision was met “on the recommendation of the captain and coach”. Sam Billings of Kent replaces Buttler and will keep wicket in Edinburgh but is not in the squad to face Australia.

Tom Curran is not in the 13-man squad for the Scotland match but is added for the Australia series, which starts at his homeground the Oval on 13 June. Liam Plunkett returns after missing the series in New Zealand with injury, with the uncapped Craig Overton dropping out.

Morgan hopes to overcome a slight fracture to the top of the ring finger on his right hand to play “at least one more game” for Middlesex before the trip to Edinburgh next weekend. He will sit out the World XI v West Indies match at Lord’s tomorrow, which he was due to captain.

“The schedule mimics the World Cup which is great,” he said. “Our white-ball cricket was really good over the winter, and home wins in the summer leading into the World Cup are important for building confidence. We are being exposed to the best, which is what we need.”
