Escape to the Country saw a couple wanting to exchange their South London lifestyle for a rural home in Yorkshire, but they were left shocked by one property. During Wednesday's episode of the BBC show (April 24), recently retired teacher Rachel and her partner Red, from Eltham, wanted a countryside property where they could spend more quality time together.

They were armed with a budget of £425,000 and were searching for a spacious three-bedroom house. They also wanted a workshop for Red to continue his metal working job from home to as and he also wanted to volunteer as a football coach.

The show host Steve Brown helped Rachel and Red search for a peaceful countryside pad and showed them around three properties. But it was the second house that left Red shocked.

The trio visited a home in Wetwang, East Riding of Yorkshire, which was open to offers over £400,000. The converted barns had a main four-bedroom house and a two-bedroom annexe and was close to York and the coast.

After exploring the spacious property, Rachel and Red joined Steve in the garden to discuss its value. "Let's look for a price", Steve told the couple. Red replied: "I'm going to go £425,00, I'm going right at the top end". Rachel then added: "Well, I'm going to optimistically say £400,000", as Steve confirmed she had guessed right.

"It's on the market for £400,000", he said, "You have got £25,000 if you want to look at it that way in terms of budget."

Red then jumped in and said: "Steve, you're not winding us up, are you?", as Steve denied the claim. "That is a lot for your money, isn't it", Rachel exclaimed as Red looked on in disbelief.

However, despite loving the property Rachel and Red were later blown away by the mystery house. The period home in Wansford, East Riding of Yorkshire, had a large kitchen, three reception rooms, four bedrooms and was in an ideal location.

It was on the market for £387,000 so below budget. But Rachel and Red decided to not put an offer on any of the homes shown during the show.

Escape to the Country airs weekdays at 3pm on BBC One
