More than 100 firefighters were battling a huge blaze at a warehouse in Essex throughout the night.

The fire tore through the building on Festival Way in Basildon after breaking out some time after midnight.

The warehouse was "completely alight", with flames also affecting a neighbouring industrial unit.

But officer in charge Neil Fenwick said crews had acted quickly and prevented the spread of the fire.

He said: "The warehouse, which we believe is used for packaging and distribution, contained a large amount of stock and the fire took hold very quickly.

"Firefighters have done an absolutely brilliant job here this morning. They spotted the fire had started to spread to the large warehouse next door and managed to extinguish the fire very quickly and stopped the fire spreading."

Eight fire engines remained at the scene on Sunday morning, along with firefighters who were continuing to extinguish the flames.

The fire was brought under control at 5am but by 8am it was clear the entire building had been destroyed.

Essex Police said there are not believed to be any casualties. They added an investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
