Evening Standard presents The Future of Food debate

The London Evening Standard, in conjunction with Syngenta, a leading agriculture company, is running a series of debates on the future of food.

The first debate, Technology and Food, will take place on Wednesday 22 March at Somerset House. A panel of industry experts and commentators will consider the following; "against the backdrop of food shortages, climate change and population growth, can we realistically tackle food sufficiency challenges without technology?".

By 2050, it is projected that there will be 9.2 billion people on the planet, and recent estimates suggest that food production will have to increase by 70 per cent if we are to feed everyone.

The debate will put the consumer at the centre of this discussion, and encourage engagement in the increasing need for technology behind their food, the opportunities that this provides and the impact that it may have.

Some of the proposed questions the panel will tackle are:

  • What are the global food production challenges that we are facing? How will they impact Londoners and communities across the world?

  • Is the growing use of technology an acceptable consequence of ensuring sufficient food in London, the UK and globally?

  • Can we ensure global food sufficiency without technology?

Following the debate, all guests will have the opportunity of a private viewing of The Syngenta Photography Award. This exhibition will bring together 92 images from 43 photographers, representing 22 countries; each depicting powerful responses to the theme of Grow-Conserve.
