Everton come back to Newcastle United in bid to get Yankuba Minteh 'swap' resurrected

Newcastle United sources have denied talk that Yankuba Minteh was threatened with reserve team football after his move to Everton broke down.

Chronicle Live understands that Everton have attempted to get talks back on track for Minteh while the door on discussions for Dominic Calvert-Lewin have been left ajar on Merseyside. However, that would involve the Toffees reducing their asking price of £37million for the striker.

Newcastle walked away from talks with Everton last week and left the room after demands from the Merseyside club became too much.

There were suggestions on Thursday that Minteh had been told he would be relegated to the reserves if he did not take up a move to Lyon with the Ligue 1 club bidding £40million for his services. Everton bid for Minteh earlier this week but their offer was not even close to triggering the move to Goodison Park - despite the teenager agreeing personal terms via intermediaries.

Time is running out for Newcastle to sell Minteh in time for Sunday's PSR health check deadline but club officials are calm about the club's financial status. United increased its revenues to £250.3m from £180m as they reported a loss after tax of £73.4m.

But we understand that Newcastle have still been working around the clock to get some players sold before Sunday. It is believed that half a dozen players are available for transfer as things stand but not all will be sold.

For Minteh the Lyon offer remains on the table and Everton's return to proceedings comes with the Toffees also keen to ensure they aren't stung by the Premier League's PSR rules. Reports yesterday stated that the top flight are careful scrutinising transfer activity.

Minteh's agent Bakary Bojang told Chronicle Live on Saturday morning: "It is correct that Newcastle are willing to sell the player if they receive a good offer. From our side if Newcastle wants to sell and the sporting project is good we will definitely look at it. We are in communication with some clubs."
