West Ham will hope to continue their recent momentum when they face Premier League rivals Everton in the Carabao Cup tonight.

The Hammers made a dismal start to the season against Newcastle, but were much improved in defeat to Arsenal and saw off Hull in round three - a match overshadowed by the positive Covid-19 results recorded by David Moyes, Issa Diop and Josh Cullen - before shocking many by thrashing much-fancied Wolves 4-0 on Sunday night.

Moyes picked the team and tactics for that latter game and made several calls to coach Stuart Pearce in the stadium from home as he self-isolated in accordance with Government guidelines and is set to do the same for this encounter against his former employers, with assistant Alan Irvine once again in the dugout.

West Ham should face a tough test against an Everton side that have begun the campaign with five straight wins across all competitions under Carlo Ancelotti, including top-flight triumphs against Tottenham, West Brom and Crystal Palace and comfortable cup victories over EFL opposition in Salford City and Fleetwood.

West Ham will be without right-back Ryan Fredericks, who sustained a hamstring injury against Wolves and is not expected to return until after the October international break.

Everton are without defenders Mason Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite as well as goalkeeper Jonas Lossl, striker Cenk Tosun and injury-plagued midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

Prediction: Everton 2-0 West Ham

West Ham's destruction of Wolves was most unexpected and provided some much-needed respite for the club during a difficult period.

However, they remain an inconsistent weekly proposition and Wednesday's trip to Merseyside to face an Everton team in such great form thanks in no small part to the headline arrival of James Rodriguez and the goals of Dominic Calvert-Lewin is likely to be a step too far.
