A key figure within Everton’s backroom staff has now raised more than £50,000 for charity as he approaches the final week of his inspirational efforts.

Jack Dowling launched his bid to run 26 marathons in 26 weeks after his brother, Tom Dowling, was diagnosed with cancer. Tom sadly passed away earlier this year and Jack has kept up his incredible efforts to ensure his brother’s legacy is one that helps others.

The first-team physical performance coach is set for his final marathon on Merseyside on Sunday before concluding Project 26:26 with the London Marathon later this month. A celebration of his achievements is planned for this weekend as supporters prepare to give him a huge send-off.

Jack set himself the 26-marathon challenge in an effort to raise money and awareness for cancer charity Macmillan. Speaking to the ECHO ahead of the first run back in October he explained: “[Tom’s diagnosis] was a real shock to me. You struggle at times... For me, doing something to take the mind off it is going for a run and this is where I came up with the challenge. What Macmillan have done for Tom and my family and families around the country is unbelievable so I’m just going out to do a run, I’m not doing anything, I’m just going for a run, and if I can raise awareness and support the great job that Macmillan do, and help our Tom, that is all it is for me.”

His efforts have since met with a massive response and an outpouring of support that has seen almost 800 people back him with donations.

After being blown away by the initial response, Jack set what he thought was an ambitious fundraising target of £32,250 - the amount it would take to fund a Macmillan nurse’s work for six months. He passed that milestone with ease and has since doubled the target figure in the hope of being able to help MacMillan provide even more support. He is closing in on that number having now passed the £50,000 mark.

Jack’s efforts have seen him battle through atrocious weather, injury and Everton’s gruelling festive schedule as he has clocked up runs around Merseyside, typically starting in his hometown of Crosby but also taking place around away days, including in London. His efforts have received high profile backing, including this week from Everton legend Peter Reid, while first-team players have joined him on several occasions.

Project 26:26 has also continued through the tragic loss of Tom, whose life was celebrated this week and who continues to inspire Jack and his support network.

That will once again be clear on Sunday, when Jack will leave Merchant Taylors’ School at 6.15am for a run that is expected to finish at around 10am at Alive Fitness on Coronation Road in Crosby. Anyone wishing to support Jack can cheer him on - and join him in the final miles if they wish - from Burbo Bank at around 9.30am. There will then be a family fun event at Alive Fitness that will include food and a Merseyside Fire and Rescue truck.
