Ex-Coronation Street writer shares sad secret over character's axing

A former Coronation Street writer has opened up about filming the death scene of one of the soap’s much-loved characters.

Bryan Mosley, who played Alf Roberts, left the show in 1999 and sadly died himself just months later.

Daran Little, who worked on the soap at the time, replied to a tweet this week that marked 25 years since the storyline and revealed a sad secret about filming.

In the soap, Alf suffered a stroke and passed away amid Nick Tilsley’s 18th birthday party — much to the horror of his wife Audrey, played by Sue Nicholls.

"This was horrible… Bryan didn’t want to leave," Little wrote of filming the death scene. "I stood watching this scene being filmed comforting Barbara Knox who was crying. Less than two months later Bryan himself was dead."

Little then shared a sweet tribute to the actor, writing: "A wonderful man of God, a terrific friend, kind and generous and forever in my heart."

When a Corrie fan on X/Twitter asked why Mosley was written out of the soap if he didn’t want to leave, Little responded by claiming it was a producer's decision.

Little went on to write nearly 100 episodes of Coronation Street. In 2010, he joined the team at EastEnders and is still a prominent writer on the BBC One soap today.

Just last week, Little tweeted in defence of the show after reports of Ben Mitchell actor Max Bowden’s exit later this year surfaced.

"I’m blocking those who accuse me of hating EE characters," he hit back. "We spend our time coming up with stories and characters, creating balance, listening to viewers and trying to keep a 38yr old soap fresh and relevant.

"It’s the best it’s been for years. Honoured & proud to be part of it."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
