With HBO's blockbusting fantasy Game of Thrones coming to an end next year, the theories as to how the series will wrap up continue to pour in.

Just yesterday (December 14) it was reported that ice spiders could feature in the upcoming eighth and final season, based on a Twitter tease from creator George RR Martin.

And now, Littlefinger actor Aidan Gillen has offered his thoughts.

Speaking to ET Online, the Irish star revealed: "I always thought it'd be nice for it to have a happy ending. But I can't imagine that would be appropriate."

Littlefinger's time on the show came to a gory end during the season 7 finale, and Gillen has spoken of his excitement about viewing the last season as an everyday fan.

"It's a great thing. I'll be excited to watch it as an audience member. [Hopefully] it's something unexpected."

The Peaky Blinders man admitted that the general consensus during his time on the set was that nobody knew how the show would end – including the showrunners and writers.

"There were stories about George RR Martin leaving secrets in vaults with combinations and all of that," Gillen added. "I know it adds to the allure, but the fact that so many people have so many expectations hinging on it and so many people are interested, it's this huge global storytelling phenomenon.

"It's pretty fascinating. The fact that I was actually part of it for a number of years is kind of mind-blowing, as a big player in George Martin's fantastic world".

Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere in April 2019. The show airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Season 7 is now available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray or digital download.
