EXCLUSIVE Giovanna Fletcher On Bodyshaming: 'New Mums Shouldn't Have That Added Pressure'

Giovanna Fletcher is a woman so multi-talented that we actually suspect she might just be SuperWoman.

The 31-year-old author has written no less than six books and novellas, maintains a popular vlogging account, can sing and act, all whilst raising two young children with her husband Tom Fletcher from McFly.

We mean, we got exhausted just writing all of that.

However, earlier this year it was the star’s Instagram account that caught the headlines, with Giovanna being praised by fans across the globe when she shared a black and white selfie of her post-baby bump two weeks after giving birth to her second son, Buddy.

Alongside the image, Gi poignantly wrote: “A few days ago I had a near stranger point at my stomach, laugh and say ‘Oh look, Mummy’s still got her tummy’. This was eleven days after giving birth. I was so shocked I laughed.

"But the words have stuck with me. Obviously. It wasn’t left there either as there was another comment about my face ‘slimming down’. More than anything, I was baffled over the stranger’s need to share her thoughts…

"Yes, I still have a bump. But that bump kept my little baby boy safe for a whole nine months. That bump has filled my world with even more love and light than I knew possible. That bump is a miracle worker… My bump will slowly go over time, but I’ll never stop being thankful to it and my body for everything it’s given me.”

*Mic drop*

And obviously when we caught up with Giovanna at the book launch for her newest book 'Always With Love’ we had to discuss the pressure on new mums in a bit more detail, and Gi admitted that she never thought her words would spark such a positive debate.

Speaking exclusively to Yahoo Celebrity UK, she explained: “I wasn’t even calling somebody out, it was literally just the fact that something was said to me that made me wonder about my body.

"I’ve had two children, my body has changed - how do I feel? And I decided that I feel amazing because my body has done this amazing thing. It’s a shame that pregnancy is this amazing time and we beat it down and say 'Our bodies should do this or that’.

"Who says that? It’s a shame that it’s being projected onto women and that new mums have that added pressure, new mums don’t need that added pressure.”

She went on to add: “With the internet, if you write something it will be there forever so you do have to think about what you put out there but I didn’t think my post would get such a big reaction.

"It was just a moment where I felt really empowered and that’s why I shared it.”

And we can say with near-certainty that mums up and down the country couldn’t be more glad that she did.

Giovanna also opened up about being a working mum, admitting that she and Tom are lucky to be able to split parenting right down the middle when it comes to Buddy and their two-year-old son, Buzz.

She explained: “We are very, very lucky that we are both flexible enough to work from home and we can try and take it in turns to have time with the children while the other one writes.

"It’s lovely because we get one-on-one time with the kids, but it is a juggling act. I utilise my evenings, both of the boys go to bed at seven so I know I have a few hours then to get stuff done.

"The hard part is going to bed at a reasonable time because you can find yourself writing at midnight when you know you’ll be up at 5am.”

But it’s thanks to those late nights that fans of the star are lucky enough to have a sequel to Giovanna’s first novel 'Billy And Me’, 'Always With Love’ - and although there was a festive novella inbetween the two books, Gi reassures fans that you don’t necessarily have to have read that to enjoy the story.

She told us: “For me, the novella was just seeing where they are at Christmas and it is rather magical and lovely so I love it. If people fancy reading a Christmas story in June they can, but if they don’t they can go straight from Billy and Me to this one.

"I enjoy writing sequels because you kind of fall in love with characters as you write and I like to revisit them at any point - it’s like revisiting old friends.

"The last page of the book is never the end of the story.”

And we certainly can’t wait to see what Billy and Sophia have been up to since Christmas…
