Exeter Hospital's children's ward transformed into jungle paradise with £115k donation

The children’s ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E) has undergone a colourful animal-themed makeover thanks to a £115,000 donation by an Exeter businessman.

The entrance and corridor on Bramble Ward have been completely transformed with jungle wall, ceiling and floor murals, as well as a few animal sound surprises.

The bright, fun new look has been made possible thanks to a generous donation by local businessman George Griffiths, who said he wanted to help make the ward more welcoming for poorly children needing care.

He said: “It has always been a desire of mine to support a project that makes hospital space more welcoming and less intimidating to young people who find themselves requiring care.

“It’s been amazing to work alongside the inspirational team on Bramble Ward to bring the jungle theme to reality.

“I truly hope it offers some distraction and comfort to those using the entrance corridor, and kickstarts a wider project to overhaul the rest of the ward.”

Jasmine Hughes, Paediatrics and Neonatology Cluster Manager at the RD&E, said the team is delighted with the transformation, as are patients and their families.

“Our intention was for our patients to feel at ease from the moment they arrive on Bramble Ward, and this is exactly what this project has achieved,” she said.

“The jungle murals, sounds and 3D animals all contribute to a positive and playful experience as children and young people approach the department.

“The impact is incredibly positive, and the feedback from patients, families and staff has only emphasised how important this is.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed to deliver this outcome, and in particular to George and Amy Griffiths, without whom this would not have been possible.

“We are hopeful that we can continue to make further improvements to the rest of Bramble Ward that ensures the whole environment has the same positive, welcoming and child-friendly feel.”

Debbie Allen, Community Fundraiser for Royal Devon Hospitals Charity (RDHC), said George’s donation had made a massive impact for some of Devon’s youngest patients.

“We are absolutely thrilled with what we’ve been able to achieve with George’s help and can’t thank him enough for his generosity.

“Hospital can be a scary place as an adult, let alone a child, so we hope the ward’s fabulous new look will bring lots of smiles to lots of little faces during what can be a very unsettling time.”

Royal Devon Hospitals Charity, which raises money to help Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to deliver facilities and services over and above those provided by the NHS, has raised funds through its Starfish Appeal to make similar enhancements in the children’s outpatients department.

This year, the charity has launched its Children’s Emergency Department Appeal to create a special space for young patients in the RD&E’s new emergency department. For more information about the appeal, visit www.royaldevoncharity.org.uk/childrens-ed-appeal
