Exmouth's former railway carriage up for sale - but it needs some TLC

The Former Railway Carriage, which sat on Exmouth's Queens Drive as a cafe, is up for sale.

The advert says it is in 'fair-used condition' but as you can see from the images on the advert, it needs some serious TLC to get it back up to the condition it was when stationed in the town.

The carriage was parked at the former Rowlands Fun Park at Queens Drive for a number of years. Once redevelopment of Queens Drive started by East Devon District Council in 2015, owner of the Railway Cafe Keith Southwell told the Journal: "Enough is enough - I’m closing at the end of the month. I just can’t be bothered with the hassle anymore.”

It's a former British Railways mark one carriage (former number 4039, tourist second open). It was used as a cafe at Minehead station before being moved to Exmouth where it lived as the carriage cafe for several years.

In 2016, it was moved to Newquay and was used as a cafe at Lappa Valley Railway in Cornwall until 2019. For more information, view the sale on Facebook Marketplace. There are also more images available of the carriages interior.

The inside is now stripped bare and used for storage, there is no further sign of the carriage's history inside.

The advert reads: "Initial restoration commenced in 2021 but due to a change of circumstance is now surplus to requirements."

It is described as 'Ideal for restoration as Glamping/camping or as cafe once again.'

The buyer added: "Sensible offers considered, viewing strictly by appointment only. Buyer removes from site within 1 month of purchase. (Advice on transport is available!)."
