The train has been stuck on the line for hours since the incident, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Huge disruption to the service has followed, with several trains between Liverpool and Ormskirk cancelled a poor weather preventing a replacement bus service from running.
Merseyrail tweeted a picture of the train covered in compacted snow, blaming this for the issue.
This image shows the issue at Aintree this morning. The collector shoe on the train, which picks up the electricity, has been covered in compacted snow. The snow acts as an insulator, which prevents the electricity getting through to the trains motors, causing damage. pic.twitter.com/wep4Iax5HE
