F1 Hungarian Grand Prix LIVE! Race result and latest updates - Verstappen wins ahead of Hamilton and Russell

F1 Hungarian Grand Prix LIVE!

We’re in Budapest this weekend for the last race ahead of the mid-season break as we could be in store for another shock winner after George Russell secured the first pole position of his career. The Mercedes man edged out Ferrari's Carlos Sainz by just 0.044 seconds - to become only the fifth British driver this century to take top spot in qualifying.

Charles Leclerc — who lead with seven poles this F1 season, and is in third today — last week crashed while leading the French GP to give Max Verstappen a huge win and a 63-point lead over his title rival in the standings. But today Leclerc has a strong chance to close the gap on one of F1's hardest tracks for overtaking after Verstappen suffered a power failure in qualifying to start in P3.

Follow the final race before the summer break below!

Hamilton picks up fastest lap

15:46 , Alex Young

A welcome bonus. Wolff and Horner are both happy today, which doesn’t happen often.

Final lap

15:44 , Alex Young

The rain really coming down and Verstappen is basically tip-toeing around the circuit to win the race!

From 10th, to win. What a drive! Hamilton, from seventh, takes second.

Lap 69

15:42 , Alex Young

Geen flag and the rain is coming down “hard”, according to Russell.

Lap 68

15:40 , Alex Young

Bottas is retiring after suffering no power. We’ll have a virtual safety care for the final two laps.

Lap 67

15:38 , Alex Young

It’s very quiet in the Ferrari garage. It really could have been Leclerc’s day, it feels. A superb day for Red Bull and Mercedes, even if Russell did start on pole.

Lap 65

15:35 , Alex Young

Hamilton overtakes Russell with five laps to go! No orders from Mercedes, it appears...

Lap 63

15:32 , Alex Young

Hamilton does it and Wolff gives it a big fist pump. Into third.

Lap 62

15:31 , Alex Young

Sainz is really struggling and it’s surely only a matter of time before Hamilton moves into third.

Verstappen’s lead surely unbeatable now with Russell just shy of 10 seconds off the pace.

Lap 60

15:29 , Alex Young

Verstappen has built up a lead of over nine seconds as we enter the final 10 laps. Hamilton is closing in on a podium spot.

Lap 58

15:25 , Alex Young

Hamilton records the fastest lap of the race so far. Sainz is within two seconds of Russell.

Lap 55

15:21 , Alex Young

Leclerc pits and is on the softs. Light rain coming in two minutes, according to Mercedes.

Lap 54

15:19 , Alex Young

Russell does it, and now Leclerc must have that sinking feeling. Those hard tyres have been a real mistake!

Lap 53

15:18 , Alex Young

Still a little bit of rain as Russell continues to look for space to get around Leclerc and into second. Sainz is also closing in on the Mercedes man.

Lap 52

15:17 , Alex Young

Hamilton is into the pits, onto the softs, and comes out in fifth as Verstappen leads the race.

Lap 51

15:16 , Alex Young

Leclerc is still struggling on his hards and Russell more than senses an opportunity. That looks like an inevitability.

Lap 49

15:14 , Alex Young

Sainz is now on the softs, Hamilton will likely head into the pits himself soon as Verstappen bares down on him.

Lap 47

15:11 , Alex Young

“Light drizzles”, says Verstappen over his radio as lap 47 begins. Hamilton continues to close the gap on race-leader Sainz, and is predicted to be within striking distance in two laps.

Oh, Sainz is now into the pits and comes out in... fifth.

Russell, in fourth, is also going faster than third-placed Leclerc.

Lap 45

15:08 , Alex Young

Verstappen is back into the podium places as Leclerc goes wide and drops into fourth. Some race, this.

Lap 43

15:04 , Alex Young

All change again! Verstappen spins, recovers quickly but allows Leclerc to fly back past him and allows Russell to close the gap.

A lifeline for Ferrari!

Lap 41

15:03 , Alex Young

Leclerc is not happy with his tyres - he’s just called them “s***”over his radio - as Verstappen overtakes him into fourth. This could be a blunder from Ferrari.

Lap 39

15:01 , Alex Young

Verstappen, Leclerc and Russell all pit for a second time, onto the mediums so must be confident that the rain will improve.

Lap 37

14:57 , Alex Young

Tsunoda spins and soon regains his composure, but not before dropping down to 20th.

Leclerc’s lead is now up to five seconds.

Lap 35

14:55 , Alex Young

We hit the halfway point of the race and it’s turning into a great strategic battle between Ferrari and Mercedes, while Verstappen fights for a podium... oh, and we’ve got some rain!

Lap 33

14:50 , Alex Young

The spitting rain has arrived and the drivers are not happy. It’s not expected to last for long, though.

Lap 31

14:47 , Alex Young

Russell is just about holding on to the race lead under serious pressure from Leclerc.

We're into lap 31... and Leclerc overtakes! What a move!

Lap 29

14:45 , Alex Young

Leclerc closes the gap to wining 0.2 seconds and it appears only a matter of time until Russell is overtaken, but a wobble during the third corner gives the leader enough room to hold on.

The top four are separated by 5.5s.

Lap 27

14:43 , Alex Young

Hamilton gets a second tracks limits warning.

Lap 25

14:40 , Alex Young

Leclerc is closing in on Russell, the gap just over one second. The top four are building up an eight-second lead over Hamilton.

Lap 23

14:38 , Alex Young

All of the top 10 are now on mediums, with Russell leads the race. and second-placed Leclerc recording the fastest lap.

Lap 21

14:34 , Alex Young

Hamilton and Leclerc have also now pitted, so that’s the top order all in at least once.

Hamilton is seventh, Leclerc comes back in at second, ahead of Sainz.

Lap 19

14:30 , Alex Young

Sainz heads into the pits but, like Russell, has a 4-second stop so any advantage Ferrari may have had has gone. He rejoins in fourth, with Russell now up to third.

Leclerc leads, Hamilton in second.

Lap 17

14:28 , Alex Young

Russell and Verstappen are into the pits. Russell comes out in sixth with Max back in eighth.

Lap 15

14:25 , Alex Young

Norris has gone into the pits for a change of tires, and lost a few seconds with a ‘sticky left tyre’.

Verstappen asks his team over the radio: “Guys, what’s going on?”

We’re not sure.

Lap 11

14:20 , Alex Young

The battle for fourth is hotting up, and Hamilton launches the first attack on Norris heading into the first corner but quickly has to retreat. Verstappen is basically on Hamilton’s gearbox just 0.5s behind and with DRS.

It’s all primed for the final corner and Hamilton is up into fourth as the 12th lap begins, and Verstappen is right behind him to send Norris into sixth!

14:17 , Alex Young

Pirelli approve.

Lap 9

14:16 , Alex Young

It’s as you were for the top four - Russell, Sainz, Leclerc and Norris, but Hamilton is up three to fifth and now facing a battle with Verstappen in sixth, who is up from 10th.

Verstappen is flying along as Sainz registers the fastest lap of the race.

Lap 7

14:14 , Alex Young

Verstappen is up to sixth after a superb undertaking past Ocon. Perez then follows him into eighth.

Russell, still two seconds ahead of Sainz, has been told there will be no rain for at least half an hour.

Lap 5

14:11 , Alex Young

Alonso goes way off the racing line and Verstappen doesn’t need a second invite, so the title leader and reigning champion is up to seventh.

Russell is now around 1.9secs ahead of Sainz.

Lap 3

14:09 , Alex Young

Russell, on soft tyres, has built up a 2.6s advantage over Sainz, who is on mediums, and looking in control. Verstappen is up to eighth after starting in P10.

Rain is still light.

Lap 1

14:05 , Alex Young

Russell just about stopped Sainz overtaking him on the second corner but was really struggling to remain on the racing line. Hamilton goes off the track but quickly restores his composure.

Albion has damage to his front wing so he is straight into the pits and we have a virtual safety care.

LIGHTS OUT!

14:04 , Alex Young

We’re underway at the Hungaroring!

14:00 , Alex Young

It’s spitting with rain.

13:50 , Alex Young

The wind is really picking up and Toto Wolff has just said on track that “the big rain” is coming. The clouds are very dry.

On Russell?: “He’s good a handling pressure.”

Anthem time

13:45 , Alex Young

The crowd are on their feet.

13:22 , Alex Young

The cars are on the track for their practice starts. So much wheelspin!

It’s very windy in Budapest, which could prove a real problem for some.

Masi reveals death threats

13:09 , Alex Young

Sacked Formula One race director Michael Masi has said he received death threats following the decision that cost Lewis Hamilton an eighth world title.

Masi was stood down from the race director's role after an investigation into his handling of the Abu Dhabi title showdown finale in December. Masi quit F1 last month to return home to Australia, and has now revealed the scale of abuse he has received.

"There were some really dark days," Masi told Sydney's Daily Telegraph. "I felt like I was the most hated man in the world. I got death threats, people saying they were going to come after me and my family.

"I still remember walking down the street in London a day or two later. I thought I was OK until I started looking over my shoulder. I was looking at people wondering if they were going to get me."
