F1 LIVE! Verstappen wins - United States Grand Prix race reaction, updates and latest news

F1 LIVE!

Max Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton late to earn a record-tying 13th win of the season at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, and delivered a victory to honour the memory of Red Bull team founder and owner Dietrich Mateschitz.

Verstappen's race was nearly undone by a rare slow pit stop by Red Bull midway through the race that dropped him well behind Hamilton. But Verstappen fought back to pass last season's rival for the championship on lap 50 of 56.

Verstappen then had to hold off the pestering Hamilton through the final laps as his team warned him not to exceed track limits that would draw a penalty. The win as a relief for Red Bull. The team had announced shortly before qualifying on Saturday that Mateschitz had died at age 78. Verstappen vowed he'd give everything to get the win to honour him and pulled off a fitting tribute.

Lewis Hamilton up next

21:56 , Marc Mayo

“Firstly, a huge thank you to the crowd here. This is the biggest crowd we’ve had there. Secondly, a big shout out to my team. We came here wth upgrades and closed the gap. I did everything I could, they were just a little too quick today.”

Leclerc gives his reaction

21:54 , Marc Mayo

“Satisfied in a way, we started P12 but looking at the race it’s a bit disappointing. We had the pace but too much degradation towards the end of the race. P3 from P12 is not that bad.”

Verstappen reacts

21:48 , Marc Mayo

“That was for Dietrich, I gave it everything out there. Congrats guys, you really deserve it.”

Chequered flag!

Verstappen wins for the 13th time this season!

Red Bull bag the Constructors’ Championship as Hamilton comes home second.

Final lap!

21:44 , Marc Mayo

Apple CEO Tim Cook is waiting to wave that chequered flag...

The things you can do when you’re rich and famous, eh?

21:41 , Marc Mayo

Lap 54/56: Verstappen breaks DRS on Hamilton and that could be that, barring any surprise interventions from the stewards. And there’s his last warning on track limits!

Leclerc has over two seconds on Perez, in defence of third.

21:39 , Marc Mayo

Another warning for Verstappen on track limits, one more breach and it’s a five-second penalty...

21:38 , Marc Mayo

Lap 52/56: Hamilton complains of Verstappen going off as he keeps within sight of the Red Bull but still unable to make a serious reply.

Team radio tells the new race leader to be wary of track limits in the final laps.

Verstappen leads!

21:36 , Marc Mayo

Whoever has access to the “power” dial at Red Bull HQ has taken a liberal attitude towards it.

Verstappen is flying through both the technical and power sections and uses the long back straight to edge ahead on DRS.

Hamilton fights back valiantly, straining every sinew through the next few corners... but it’s the Dutchman who prevails!

21:34 , Marc Mayo

Lap 49/56: And Verstappen is within DRS territory...

Is this a fight Hamilton can even compete in, let alone win?

21:30 , Marc Mayo

As if we didn’t need any more contenders, Perez is eating away at Leclerc’s advantage and is set to arrive on his bumper in a few laps’ time.

Hamilton has 1.9 on Verstappen. Leclerc four back and 3.3 ahead of Perez.

Grandstand finish incoming!

Ten laps to go!

21:28 , Marc Mayo

46/56: Hamilton has a little wobble and Verstappen is now only 2.2 seconds behind.

Can the world champion deprive his old rival of a first race win of the season? A personal best lap 46 shows Hamilton can bite back a little and even grow this lead.

In the midfield, Norris is making movements as he jumps Albon and Ocon to go eighth, behind Alonso.

21:22 , Marc Mayo

Lap 43/56: Let’s get some times on the table.

Verstappen, on the Mediums, is 3.3 seconds off Hamilton, on the Hards.

Leclerc is 0.8 seconds back in third and has 6.6 seconds on Perez, who is back ahead of Russell in fourth.

21:21 , Marc Mayo

A slow stop for Vettel! Nightmare as Aston have to drop the car and jack it back up. He led the race moments ago, a 16-second stop later leaves him 13th.

Hamilton leads!

21:20 , Marc Mayo

Lap 41/56: Vettel is beaten into Turn 1 and thus ends the German’s reign atop this race, as he passed 3,500 laps led in F1. That’s a nice milestone.

It did hold up Hamilton, mind, and Verstappen will be on his tail soon enough...

Verstappen fights Leclerc!

21:17 , Marc Mayo

A move down the inside from Verstappen into Turn 1 sees Leclerc hang back, lose the place and immediately swing back down the inside on the exit... and he keeps the position!

Perez pits to give Vettel, yet to stop for the second time, and he comes out behind Russell.

Now, down the back straight it is job done for Verstappen! Just 4.4 seconds up the road, on slower tyres, is Hamilton.

21:14 , Marc Mayo

Lap 38/56: Right then. Hamilton is the de facto leader and has 4.6 seconds on Leclerc, Verstappen right on the Ferrari’s tail as Red Bull tell him there is still a long way to go.

“Yeah, you don’t need to tell me...” he wryly replies.

21:13 , Marc Mayo

Russell the next to come in but finds himself stuck behind a Haas, in seventh, with Perez to race leader and soon to come in too.

Verstappen pits!

21:11 , Marc Mayo

Lap 36/56: A long, long stop for Verstappen!

An 11.1-second wait for the world champion as the front-left just did not want to go on! Even Leclerc, who pits at the same time, jumps him.

21:09 , Marc Mayo

Any danger of a Hamilton victory today? Well, the gap is stubbornly holding at around 1.6 seconds between the Merc and leader Verstappen.

The Dutchman is still unhappy with his driveability, Red Bull handing down some setting changes that are not doing the job.

Hamilton pits for an undercut opportunity, a 2.7-second stop on new Hards.

21:06 , Marc Mayo

Lap 33/56: More issues for Perez, who has that damaged front wing. Mind you, so does Russell and he has also served a time penalty for bumping off Sainz.

Just half a second separates the pair as Russell looks to win the fight for fourth.

21:04 , Marc Mayo

A five-second time penalty for Gasly for breaking safety car rules - specifically not staying within ten car lengths of the car in front. He’s running seventh and will need to stop again.

Meanwhile, Perez tells Red Bull that Leclerc went off track as he performed that overtake. The reply isn’t so sure (because he didn’t).

21:02 , Marc Mayo

Lap 30/56: Brilliant from Leclerc!

Once again into the end of that DRS zone, the Ferrari driver darts down the inside this turn and caresses his car into third.

Leclerc battles Perez!

21:01 , Marc Mayo

Leclerc has a go at the end of the back straight and takes third place very briefly, before running wide as Perez locks up to ensure there isn’t a fresh pile of twisted metal on that particular part of the track.

The Red Bull holds on but that final step on the podium is very much in Leclerc’s sight.

20:57 , Marc Mayo

Lap 27/56: Verstappen complains of “driveability” issues in his Red Bull but a 1.7-second gap to Hamilton says he is just about managing!

Further back, Norris is having to hold off a pair of Haas cars in defence of ninth with both AlphaTauris overtaking him earlier on. He’s a man on Hard tyres in a sea of Medium runners.

In fact, he’s reporting damage. A tough race ahead with McLaren needing to make hay on these Alpine struggles.

Green flag!

20:54 , Marc Mayo

A total of eight safety car laps have taken place at COTA and once again Verstappen eases clear of Hamilton at the restart.

20:50 , Marc Mayo

Lap 24/56: Lots of cars hit debris on the straight there and Zhou pits for new tyres, perhaps having collected some.

When we get going (again) Verstappen will lead Hamilton, Perez third ahead of Leclerc, Russell and Vettel.

Investigation after the race for any potential penalties.

20:47 , Marc Mayo

Replays show Alonso pulling up to Stroll down the back straight aided by the slipstream, and pulling to the left to do the overtake.

Stroll defended with a late nudge to the left and they collided, sending Alonso skyward briefly before he was collected by the barrier and managed to carry on.

“Late move,” says Alonso over team radio. Hard to disagree.

Safety car

20:45 , Marc Mayo

Lap 22/56: The two future Aston Martin teammates have produced a lot of debris with Alonso able to return to the pits and Stroll out his car. Both are okay.

Big crash!

20:44 , Marc Mayo

Alonso and Stroll collide on the straight!

Green flag!

Verstappen backs up the pack and has Hamilton right on his tail...

A clean getaway for the Red Bull with lots to scrap over further back! Stroll and Vettel go at it while Alonso moves up to eighth over Gasly and Tsunoda gets Norris for 10th.

“These brakes are something else, I’m struggling,” says Hamilton, who had his whole front brakes changed on the grid after a pulling issue after he left the garage.

Safety car will likely be in soon.

20:37 , Marc Mayo

Lap 19/56: Drivers are now being told a recovery vehicle is on the track - a welcome change since the drama at Suzuka.

20:35 , Marc Mayo

Well, well, well...

That could suit Leclerc and Hamilton very nicely. The Ferrari pits and the Merc will be drawn back to Verstappen’s tail at the restart.

Vettel and Alonso also take a cheap stop.

Safety car!

20:34 , Marc Mayo

Lap 18/56: The flag is thrown and Bottas looks to be in some trouble...

He’s in the gravel at Turn 19!

20:33 , Marc Mayo

Ferrari offer “Plan E” to Leclerc on the tyre strategy.

What could that be? Two stops on Hards? A Soft set to finish? Some type of Flinstones deal? With Ferrari, you can’t rule it out!

20:31 , Marc Mayo

Lap 16/56: Verstappen bangs in a fastest lap and leads the race as Perez pits, Leclerc running second - over a whole pit stop behind the leader.

Verstappen pits!

20:27 , Marc Mayo

Verstappen comes out comfortably clear of Hamilton but finds himself in amongst Stroll and Leclerc’s battle for second...

No drama for the Dutchman and he can pull away once again.

Russell pits too, serving his penalty. Hard tyres for all.

20:25 , Marc Mayo

Lap 13/56: Hamilton pits, a 2.9-second stop, and he re-emerges seventh with a fair bit of clean air ahead.

20:24 , Marc Mayo

Here are the results of that experiment: Bottas, who had a slower stop, is still behind Gasly after the Frenchman pits.

Hamilton tells team radio his tyres are still good but Mercedes call “hammer time”!

20:22 , Marc Mayo

Lap 11/56: Bottas will be one to watch as he pits from tenth place, attempting an undercut on Norris and Gasly.

If his out-lap is promising, you can bet on Perez, Leclerc or Hamilton following suit...

20:19 , Marc Mayo

Lap 8/56: Perez has been aided somewhat by his front-wing endplate flying off. It was dangling loose, which would have heralded a black-and-white flag to come in for a pit stop.

Instead, it left the scene of his car as he overtook Stroll and the Mexican is free to carry on - with Russell in his sights.

Stroll and Vettel are holding fifth and sixth with Leclerc now seventh, ahead of a scrapping Gasly and Norris.

20:13 , Marc Mayo

Lap 6/56: DRS down the long, long back straight aids Russell past Stroll and into third.

Verstappen leads by 2.7 seconds over Hamilton, the race leader complaining of “very tricky” wind.

Stroll loses fourth to Perez, who has a damaged front wing. At the back, Latifi spins off in Sector 1 but rejoins last after a pit stop.

20:11 , Marc Mayo

Leclerc had started pretty well, unlike Perez, off the line but found himself caught up in Sainz’s spin.

Starting 12th, he now runs ninth.

Perez is fifth after getting Vettel.

Five-second penalty for Russell

20:08 , Marc Mayo

Lap 3/56: Not bad given he’s knocked out a rival... That will be served by Russell at his first pit stop.

He is in between the flying Aston Martin pair of Stroll and Vettel, in third and fifth respectively.

Well, he did promise “max attack” about 11 minutes ago...

Sainz out!

20:06 , Marc Mayo

The pole-sitter is wheeled into the garage... What a nightmare for Sainz.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

Lap 2/56: Verstappen is heading off into the distance with Hamilton second and Stroll third!

Russell is holding onto fourth having gone in pretty hot and Sainz had cut across him at Turn 1, the stewards will look at that...

LIGHTS OUT!

20:04 , Marc Mayo

Verstappen flies off the line but Sainz fights back... and is spun from behind on Turn 1!

Medium tyres the order of the day

20:01 , Marc Mayo

The top 12 are all on Mediums with Kevin Magnussen and a few at the back on the Hards, no Soft (the fastest but least durable) tyres used for the start.

“I’ll give my best as always,” the Ferrari ace said yesterday.

“Again, we’re starting I think 12th or 11th with the engine penalty that we have. I’ll give my best. No crazy risks but if there’s an opportunity, I’ll be here to take it.”

What can Lance Stroll do today?

19:11 , Marc Mayo

A mighty fine fifth place on the grid for Lance Stroll today could shoot him up the standings.

Verstappen booing ‘unacceptable’, says Wolff

19:05 , Marc Mayo

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has hit out at Max Verstappen receiving a rough reception from some fans in Austin, with some reports of “cheater” hurled at the two-time champion.

Wolff told Sky Germany: "That is unacceptable.

“The booing, whether it's on the podium or on the fan stage, nobody wants to see that. I think [F1] have done a lot against this kind of behaviour. It is somewhat contained and it doesn't belong here either. Something like that should not happen.

“It goes both ways. In Austria it was against Lewis, here [in the USA] it is massively against Max. We have to get everyone on the same page. We fight hard on and off the track, but we don't have that kind of hostility towards each other.”

Mercedes drop-off upsets Lewis Hamilton

18:53 , Marc Mayo

Lewis Hamilton was left disappointed by his Mercedes car failing to live up to its early promise this weekend - although grid penalties have elevated him to third place for today’s start.

“It was not the first sector for me, it was the last sector, but that was a really difficult qualifying session,” Hamilton said.

“I had been feeling so optimistic all weekend, the car setup was feeling good, everyone back at the factory worked so hard to bring an upgrade and I was so hopeful we would be much closer than we were.

“Once we got to qualifying, I don't know if it is because the temperatures dropped or wind or what, but the car was such a handful all of a sudden and not unlike any other time we have driven it, but I was expecting a lot more.”

Qualifying recap

18:45 , Marc Mayo

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz took pole position for the United States Grand Prix after beating team-mate Charles Leclerc to top spot by 0.065 seconds.

Leclerc will be demoted 10 places following an engine penalty, promoting world champion Max Verstappen to the front row for Sunday's race at the Circuit of the Americas.

Sergio Perez qualified fourth in the other Red Bull, but drops back to ninth for exceeding his number of allocated engine parts.

Earlier on this weekend, Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso and Zhou Guanyu were all handed penalties.
