Certain households in England are set to receive up to £550 in support this summer through the expanded Household Support Fund, a tax expert has said. The fund exists to help families with essential expenses, including food or something unexpected, such as a boiler repair.

Andy Wood, from Crypto Tax Degens, said: "The expansion of the Household Support Fund provides additional support for households dealing with the increasing cost of living. With grants of up to £550 available, eligible families can receive financial help to cover essential expenses, including food, utilities such as gas, electricity, and water, and essentials linked to energy and water such as warm clothing and boiler repairs.

“The fund can also help cover the cost of essential household appliances like cookers and washing machines, as well as essential household items like school uniforms and bedding, but priority will be given to food and fuel. For some households, the support provided may come as direct cash payments into their bank accounts.

"Local authorities are offering varying levels of support tailored to their communities' needs. For example, Leeds is offering £100 payments, while Stockport has £315 available, South Ribble £350, and Lancashire £250. East Riding has £200 available, Shropshire offers £400, and Waverley has £550 payments.

"The fund helps with essential household bills and items, but mortgage support is not included. If you’re facing difficulties with mortgage payments, you should get in touch with your lender to explore alternative solutions."

How to apply for the Household Support Fund

Andy said: "Previous applicants can reapply, although each household is limited to one application under Scheme 5. Applicants should be prepared to provide detailed information about their circumstances, including supporting documents like bank statements. This makes sure that funds are directed to those who need them most and helps streamline the application process.

"When applying for assistance, it's important to have the necessary documents ready, including your Council Tax reference number and a recent bank statement. Failure to provide these details could result in delays or even closure of your application.

"Applicants can expect their submissions to be reviewed within seven to 10 working days, with prompt responses from the council if further information is required. It's important to follow the five-day response window to prevent application closure."

Applications are made through your local council and there is more guidance on gov.uk.
