Yahoo News Fantastic Beasts wins the first Oscar for Harry Potter
It's hard to believe but Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has won the first-ever Oscar for the Harry Potter franchise.
Colleen Atwood scooped her fourth career Oscar win for Best Costume Design for the well-received wizarding world spin-off, marking the first time that a film in the Harry Potter series has won an Academy Award.
It's not like the films weren't up for awards before – with previous nominations including Philosopher's Stone being up for three awards, while Prisoner of Azkaban was up for Best Original Score.
"Sting told me I was going to win tonight. I didn't believe him," Atwood joked during her speech, before expressing her surprise backstage at it being the first Harry Potter win.
"That's shocking. Because there's so much incredible kind of artistry in the Harry Potter movies. I think maybe the fact that this movie is set in the 1920s, which kind of keyed off a different sort of visual sense," she explained (via EW).
Atwood has previously won Oscars for Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and Alice in Wonderland, with her fourth win at this year's ceremony coming from her 12th nomination.
She beat Allied's Joanna Johnston, Florence Foster Jenkins' Consolata Boyle, Jackie's Madeline Fontaine and La La Land's Mary Zophres.
