FastStone Capture review

FastStone Capture lets you grab what you want, from active windows to a user-designated portion of the screen, or create a screen recording. Once you have the image or recording, you can resize, add text, and more.

Pros

Quick toolbar access: FastStone Capture opens as a small toolbar on the upper-left portion of your desktop. The main options are easily accessed, so you can choose the screenshot option in one click. Options include the active window, a scrolling window, and even freehand. The screenshots were clean and accurate in all tests.

Editor: As soon as you take the screenshot, the new image opens in the FastStone Editor. You can add captions, blur the edges, draw on the image, and resize it, and there are even seven effects you can apply, including sepia tone or watercolor.

Cons

Toolbar design: The toolbar's icons are black and white and somewhat small, and we had to check the tooltips to find out what a few of them were for. Since the rest of the software is so intuitive, this isn't a big drawback and just some time to overcome as you become familiar with the options.

Bottom Line

FastStone Capture works well and does far more than the built-in screenshot tools. If you frequently work with images from your computer, this is a great tool to have on hand, especially with the suite of editing tools that the app includes.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of FastStone Capture 8.0.
