Fear TWD Midseason Premiere Recap: Holy Crap, Troy Otto Is Alive — and Ticked

At last! Halfway through the eighth and final season of Fear the Walking Dead, we finally learned what Strand has been up to for the last seven years. What’s more, we got a major blast from the past in the form of an alive-and-well Troy Otto. Read on, and we’ll untangle all the twists in Sunday’s “Anton.”

‘I’VE NEVER HEARD OF VICTOR STRAND’ | As the midseason premiere got underway, we were treated to a glimpse of Victor’s idyllic new life with his handsome partner Frank and their teenage son Klaus. The hotel in which they and a whole bunch of German tourists were holed up was basically heaven on earth, with a fully functioning kitchen and, based on its sparkling cleanliness, maid service. The one catch: As Madison discovered when she was brought in gasping for air, Strand had told his new family that his name was Anton.

As the hour tore through a greatest hits of Fear TWD catchphrases — “No one’s gone until they’re gone,” “Everyone deserves a second chance,” yada yada — a fella named Russell showed up with a bunch of soldiers looking for the erstwhile Wren with the intention of forcing her to tell them where PADRE is. Rather than have a whole kerfuffle started on his doorstep, Victor — sorry, Anton — agreed to give up Madison. But before he could take Russell to her, she’d convinced impressionable Klaus to help her escape. D’oh!

‘HATE TO DO TO YOU WHAT I DID TO YOUR DAUGHTER’ | By and by, Victor/Anton and Frank tracked Madison and Klaus to a nearby library, mainly so that Frank could assure his partner that whatever he’d done, it was forgivable, and so that Strand could tell his former drinking buddy why he’d reinvented himself as the man Alicia believed he could be. (No time like a crisis to discuss the Big Issues.) Only as the episode neared its conclusion and Madison, Victor and his family were tied up did we meet Russell’s boss man… Troy Otto!

Short an eye courtesy of Madison, Troy explained that since she had taken his home, he was going to take hers. But before he could force her to reveal PADRE’s location, Daniel, June and Sherry burst in with reinforcements. Instead of just take the win, Madison bragged that Troy would never find PADRE. Oh, and she was expanding. Oh, and it’s not gonna be about her but about keeping something bigger alive. Oh, and… Sure, Jan. That was the thinking that had gotten Alicia killed, Troy scoffed. And he would know, he added, producing her bony arm, because he’d killed her.

So, your thoughts on Strand’s reinvention? Troy’s resurrection? The midseason premiere as a whole? Grade the episode below, then comment away.
