Note: The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead season four.
The brand new image previews Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) moving forward after her showdown with Althea's (Maggie Grace) group of survivors, and the revelation of her mum Madison's (Madison Clark) death.
Much of the fourth season built up a mystery about Madison's fate, until finally confirming in the mid-season finale that she sacrificed her life to save Alicia and Nick from a walker herd.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss explained that Alicia is now in "a very interesting place" since Nick also died shortly after Madison's ultimate sacrifice.
"She lost both her mother and her brother, so, for the first time, she's really finding herself in the apocalypse without any of her biological family," Chambliss said.
"Yes, she has friends. Yes, she has Luciana, but there's a big difference between having your friends around and not having your mother and your brother. She's realising that she is on her own and is figuring out how she can keep the memory of both Madison and Nick alive.
"And a big part of what she's going to be asking herself is whether she can fill Madison's shoes and how that's possible for her moving forward."
Chambliss also previewed where the episodes will lead Luciana (Danay García) and Strand (Colman Domingo), since Madison's death ultimately saved their lives too.
"They are coming to terms with the fact that their revenge mission meant that they, for a time, forgot what Madison died for - the thing she believed in and the hope she tried to keep alive," Chambliss explained.
"Those three characters [Alicia, Strand and Luciana] are trying to figure out how they can move forward and how they can keep Madison's ideals alive when they kind of forgot them for so long."
Fear the Walking Dead returns on August 12 on AMC in the US, and on August 13 on AMC on BT TV in the UK. It was recently announced that E4 will be airing Fear the Walking Dead from the beginning in the UK too.
