Are you fearless enough to take on this 118-foot church tower abseil challenge?

Fearless residents are being invited to take a leap and abseil down a 118-foot church tower in a Suffolk village.

Holy Trinity Church in Long Melford will welcome visitors to take on the challenge, arranged by the 1st Long Melford Scout Group, next month.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Holy Trinity fabric and maintenance.

Judi Moss, one of the event organisers, said the event, which will run on all three days of the late May bank holiday, has taken almost nine months of planning.

"Participants can sign up for a sponsored abseil from the very high tower – the first of its kind in this neck of the woods," she said.

"Views from the top are stunning and far-reaching, so combine that with the thrill of stepping over the edge and gently lowering yourself down nearly 118ft, it’s surely going to give an adrenaline buzz like no other."

The event is open to all over 10 and people can sign up either individually or in a team.

There will also be refreshments available for children, and a teddy bear zip wire where their favourite furry friend can take part its own adventure.

Ms Moss continued: "It will be a very bustling May bank holiday weekend in Long Melford as Lee Stock music festival and open gardens will also be in full swing.

"So a lively time is guaranteed for those who wish to come along and share in a fun-filled few days."

Last year, thrill-seekers were given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to scale the inside one of the church on a scaffolding tour to raise much-needed funds.

An extensive repairs scheme to 38 clerestory windows, which lasted from May to December last year, cost in the region £150,000.
