Sean Lock died after he fought lung cancer in secret, his comedian friend Bill Bailey said.

The celebrity world went into mourning when the 8 Out of 10 Cats star died aged 58 surrounded by his family on Wednesday.

Now his friend and Strictly winner Mr Bailey, 56, said the comedian had been diagnosed with “quite advanced” lung cancer behind the scenes but he continued to work.

The star celebrated his late friend as “amazingly courageous and tough individual”.

Mr Bailey told ITV: “He had been diagnosed with lung cancer a few years ago and it was at the time quite a blow, particularly when it was quite advanced. We’ve tried to make the most of the last few years. We spent a lot of time together and went on trips together. And he’s continued to work.

“He’s amazingly courageous and tough individual who was mentally strong throughout the whole time. I’m just grateful for the time we have had together.

“A lot of comics are talking about the fact that he inspired them to become comedians. He was the one that gave them the strength and courage to carry on as comedians - it’s a tough business. He was fearless and determined and that’s what gave them strength.”

On social media, the funnyman joined stars from all walks off showbiz paying tribute to the comedy legend.

Mr Bailey confided in fans he was heartbroken to lose his “dearest friend” shortly after the news hit headlines.

He wrote on Twitter: “It’s heartbreaking to lose my dearest friend Sean Lock , he was a true original, a wonderful comic. All my thoughts are with his family.”
