Will Ferrell is clearing up some suspicions Christina Applegate had about his marriage — 20 years later!

In the July 9 episode of the MeSsy podcast, Ferrell, 56, reunited with his Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy costar, 52, to celebrate the movie's 20th anniversary. During the episode, Ferrell recalled to host Jamie Lynn Sigler how he thought Applegate assumed he had marital issues with his wife Viveca Paulin.

Ferrell jumped right into reminiscing, asking Applegate if she recalled how she thought he "was having marriage problems" during Anchorman's production.

"When we were shooting the movie, we would go out a lot socially," he said, while Applegate started laughing.

"We would all go out as a group, like, on the weekends or whatever, grab a dinner. And, I was like oh great, let's do it!" However, Paulin, 55, was constantly unavailable, which appeared suspicious.

"And you were like what's going on?" Will continued, adding that Applegate "verbalized it later" and was asking why his wife wasn't coming out with everyone.

As it turns out, Paulin had a pretty good reason for canceling.

"'I knew something was up!'" Ferrell recalled his costar saying. Applegate responded, "I remember that you guys had something you weren't sharing yet."

He told PEOPLE in 2006 about their awkward proposal. "It started serious but ended up comedic," the Elf actor said at the time.

"I took her to this beach where we had had one of our first dates. She wanted none of it. She was, like, 'The beach is creepy at night.' I was, like, 'Shut up, this is supposed to be really romantic.' "

Paulin's comment threw off Ferrell in the moment. "I was trying to think of what I was going to say and it just turned into, 'So I, uh, really like you and, uh, anyway …' Then I went down to a knee — at least I think I did — and proposed," the comedian recalled.

"So it was kind of funny, but not on purpose."

The couple share three sons: Magnus, 20, Mattias, 17, and Axel, 14.
