'Heartbroken' fiance's outrage at US police who shot dead woman in her pyjamas

An American man has reacted with shock after his Australian fiancee was shot dead by a US police officer she approached while wearing her pyjamas.

Justine Damond, 40, was reportedly gunned down by officer Mohamed Noor, who was sitting in the passenger side of the police car in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

She had called police to report what she believed to be a possible sexual assault in the quiet neighbourhood and had gone up to the car to speak to the officers inside.

Officer Noor is then said to have have fired his weapon though the window, killing Ms Damond.

Her devastated fiance, Don Damond, said he has received almost no information from officials.

Speaking at a news conference outside his home, he said: “Our hearts are broken and we are utterly devastated by the loss of Justine.

“As you know it was Justine who called 911 on Saturday evening, reporting what she believed was an active sexual assault occurring nearby.

“Sadly her family and I have been provided with almost no additional information from law enforcement regarding what happened after police arrived.”

He continued: “Our lives are forever changed as a result of knowing her. She was so kind and so darn funny.”

Officer Noor’s lawyer, Tom Plunkett, confirmed that his client had fired his weapon, killing Ms Damond, who taught yoga and meditation at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community in Minneapolis.

Neither officer is believed to have switched on their body cameras at the time of the shooting.

The Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said an investigation is under way and authorities are looking into whether there is any video of the incident.
