How Finn Wolfhard's dream of playing Scott Pilgrim came true
"Stranger Things" star voices a younger version of Michael Cera's character on "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."
Was the creative team behind animated show Scott Pilgrim Takes Off content with reuniting the cast from Edgar Wright's 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World? Nope. In addition to the vocal talents of Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Chris Evans, the series also boasts a new supporting cast including Will Forte, Kal Penn, Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, Bowen Yang, Griffin Newman, and Finn Wolfhard, who plays the teenage version of Cera's titular indie-rock bassist.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off executive producer BenDavid Grabinski tells EW that Wolfhard has long been a big Scott Pilgrim fan, and was interested in playing the lead role early on. The showrunner says, "Finn’s agent called me the second this was announced. I got a call like, 8 a.m, he's like, 'I’m Finn Wolfhard’s agent, he loves Scott Pilgrim, have you cast him yet?' I was like, 'We have not, but thank you. and I will remember that.' I kind of put it in the back of my brain. When we actually started the casting process, everyone from the movie said they wanted to come back. Right as we made that deal, [the agent] called me again. He's like, 'Hey, so, I don’t want to be like, impatient, but have you guys cast Scott Pilgrim yet?' I said, 'Oh, we’re doing everyone from the movie.' He's like, 'Oh, [Finn] will be so excited that they’re coming back!'"
Fortunately for the Stranger Things star, Grabinski and fellow showrunner Bryan Lee O'Malley cooked up the idea of having the show also feature a teenage version of Scott in a flashback and offered that role to Wolfhard instead.
"We called back and said, 'Hey, do you think he’d want to play young Scott?'" Grabinski recalls. "And he said, 'Yes!' We had a really really fun session recording with Finn, where it felt like he was having a blast, and I think it’s a great addition to the show."
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how Finn Wolfhard's dream of playing Scott Pilgrim came true.
