Firefighters descended on a historic Oldham building after a blaze broke out last night. Crews spent around three hours on King Street after a fire broke out at a derelict building at the junction with Union Street.

The fire service was called out at around 7.15pm yesterday (May 17). It's understood that no injuries were reported following the fire.

The incident took place at a site which began life as the Grand Theatre, before being rebuilt as the Gaumont Cinema in the 1930s. More recently, it was used as a Riley's snooker hall, and later the Thunderdome roller derby.

It has since been fully vacant. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At around 7.15pm yesterday (Thursday, May 16) three fire engines from Ashton, Hollins and Heywood fire stations were called to reports of a fire at a derelict commercial building on King Street, Oldham.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the fire and make the surrounding area safe. Crews were in attendance for around three hours.”
