The first full trailer for the much-awaited Downton Abbey movie is here and royalty has come to the Crawley estate.

It gives a hint at what we can expect from the big-screen outing, which is some (potentially) unwelcome guests at the estate, and Maggie Smith's Violet Crawley being as winningly cranky as ever.

A sneak peek on Monday (May 20) at the first trailer brought back one of the most beloved characters from the Emmy Award-winning series.

As the haunting strains of the Downton Abbey theme music plays, none other than Mr Carson (Jim Carter) can be seen - shot only from behind - approaching the Crawley estate.

Those who watched the TV series will remember that Carson was forced to retire at the end of the run because he'd started developing palsy.

While it's not entirely clear if he's actually returning to work as the Crawleys' butler, there's a very good reason why they'd want him to come out of retirement.

A new poster featuring the entire cast has also been released:

Series creator Julian Fellowes's film spin-off revolves around the Crawleys prepping Downton for a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary!

As well as the incredible returning cast from the ITV series, the Downton Abbey movie will also feature The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' Simon Jones (aka actual Arthur Dent!), Academy Award nominee Imelda Staunton, Peaky Blinders' Kate Phillips and Sherlock Holmes star Geraldine James as members of the royal entourage.

On top of the pressure of the Crawleys meeting the royals, Joanne Froggatt has also promised that the film will be full of "romance, fun, surprises, sadness and intrigue" too.

Downton Abbey will be arriving in cinemas September 13, 2019 in the UK and September 20, 2019 in the US, with a sequel also possible.
