Five seriously injured in overnight M5 horror crash

Five people have been rushed to hospital this morning (Tuesday, June 25) following a serious two-vehicle crash on the M5. A man has since been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink driving, drug driving and driving whilst unfit.

The two-vehicle crash took place on the M5 between Quedgeley and Gloucester during the early hours of this morning. All traffic was held on the northbound carriageway around 2.30am and motorists were stuck in traffic for a number of hours.

Five people have sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital. It is believed they are all in stable condition.

A statement from Gloucestershire Police said: "A man has been arrested this morning on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink driving, drug driving and driving whilst unfit following a 2 vehicle collision on the M5 today. 5 people have gone to hospital with serious injuries but are in stable conditions.

"The road was closed for a number of hours to tend to those requiring medical attention and the landing for #Helimed. Our thanks to @Glosfire #SWAST and @HighwaysSWEST for your assistance. Road is now re-opened."

National Highways said that "all" emergency services were working at the scene "with traffic officers en route to install strategic closures". A diversion route to the A38 was put in place to help clear the stuck traffic while crews cleared the scene.

The carriageway was cleared around 5.20am this morning and the road was reopened. Traffic in the area has eased and returned to normal.
