Man in critical condition after air ambulance lands at Swindon bus station

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after a medical episode at Swindon bus station yesterday afternoon, June 27.

An air ambulance landed and officers performed CPR on the man before he was transported.

Police were originally called to the bus station on an unrelated report and arrested a man in his 50s on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly at around 5.15pm.

However, a Wiltshire Police spokesperson explained: “While at the scene, officers became aware of a man in his 50s nearby suffering a medical episode.

“Officers commenced CPR and the man was taken to hospital in a critical condition.”

An air ambulance was at the station by 6.10pm, with Stagecoach West putting out a statement: “Due to a medical emergency at Swindon Bus Station. The air ambulance has landed.”

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 17:26hrs on Thursday 27 June to an incident in Swindon.

"We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an operations officer and an air ambulance to the scene and conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Great Western Hospital."

A large area of the town centre was closed due to the medical incident with police tape cordoning off the station.

Swindon’s Buses put out a statement at 630pm saying: “Bus station still closed, services now delayed up to 30 mins. Police have closed centre of town.”

One eyewitness at the scene has told the Adver: "There appeared to be a man collapsed and receiving CPR in the taxi lane in front of the bus station.

“Police closed the bus station and road in front of it."

Around 7pm the bus station reopened and bus services returned to normal.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance and South West Ambulance Service did not respond with comment.
