The fixtures for Plymouth Argyle's relegation rivals on penultimate weekend

It promises to be a vital weekend for Plymouth Argyle. Depending on their result away to Millwall tomorrow, as well as those elsewhere, their Championship safety could be secured, or it could still all be hanging in the balance going into their final fixture of the season against Hull City at Home Park next Saturday (May 4).

Seven clubs are battling to avoid being the two other teams who will already relegated Rotherham United in League One next season. Here is a look at their fixtures for the penultimate round of matches in the 2023/24 campaign.

17th Stoke City - Played 44 Points 50 Goal difference -16

Stoke might already have enough points to stay up after beating Argyle 3-0 at the bet365 Stadium last weekend but it is not mathematically guaranteed, hence their inclusion in this list. They make the trip to the south coast tomorrow to take on fourth-placed Southampton, who suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat at table-topping Leicester City on Tuesday night.

18th Queens Park Rangers - Played 44 Points 50 Goal difference -16

Rangers have an identical record to Stoke, even including to their goal difference, after a 1-0 home defeat of Preston North End last Saturday. They are taking on second-placed Leeds United at Loftus Road tonight.

19th Blackburn Rovers - Played 44 Points 49 Goal difference -16

Lost 3-1 at home to Sheffield Wednesday last Sunday to leave them still firmly in the relegation mix. They welcome Coventry City to Ewood Park tomorrow, with the Sky Blues playing their third game in seven days after their FA Cup semi-final penalty shoot-out defeat by Manchester United at Wembley and a 3-2 home Championship loss to Hull City on Wednesday night.

20th Plymouth Argyle - Played 44 Points 48 Goal difference -11

Argyle have not won an away league game against Millwall since January 1967. Tomorrow at The Den, which is sold out for the Lions' final home match of the season, would be a very good time to end that run.

21st Sheffield Wednesday - Played 44 Points 47 Goal difference -29

Wednesday have hauled themselves out of the bottom three after a four-game unbeaten run, including two wins. Tomorrow they will host fifth-placed West Bromwich Albion, who will be looking to secure a play-off spot.

22nd Birmingham City - Played 44 Points 46 Goal difference -16

23rd Huddersfield Town - Played 44 Points 44 Goal difference -27

The big game of the weekend in the Championship fight for survival sees Huddersfield take on Birmingham at the John Smith's Stadium. A defeat for either side could be very costly. Huddersfield lost 4-0 at home to Swansea City last Saturday so Birmingham will be optimistic of going there and winning.
