The dead live again in an unsettling new trailer for Flatliners, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.

This semi-sequel of the Academy Award-nominated Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland science fiction thriller looks even more twisted than the original, which has become a cult classic over the last 27 years.

In this remake, a team of young hotshot doctors (Oscar nominee Ellen Page, Dope star Kiersey Clemons, Rogue One's Diego Luna, The Vampire Diaries favourite Nina Dobrev and War & Peace heartbreaker James Norton) make the truly awful decision to push the boundaries of death.

"I would like you stop my heart. I'll give you one minute, and then you bring me back," says Page's Courtney, followed by a flurry of moments where the characters dangerously push the boundaries of life and death.

Defying the laws of medicine, these physicians begin to conduct experiments on those near death and unlock the terrifying secret of what lurks beyond our comprehension of dying.

The trailer shows the chilling scenes as the death-defiers get lost in delusional states of not knowing where they are – or seemingly whether they're even alive.

In homage to the original, the new Flatliners brings back original cast member Sutherland as Nelson Wright - the leader of a similarly dangerous round of experiments in the 1990 movie.

The creative team behind Flatliners includes Source Code writer Ben Ripley and director Niels Arden Oplev, most famous for his work on the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and more recently Mr. Robot.

Flatliners will arrive in US and UK cinemas on Friday, September 29.
