Flippin' Heck! Dolphin's Tail Kick Sends Fish Flying

A dolphin’s powerful tail kick sent a fish flying through the air in St Petersburg, Florida, video shared on November 18 shows.

Footage by Michael McCarthy, who runs a local boat and kayak business called See Through Canoe, shows dolphins “fish whacking”, with one sending a fish soaring through the air.

“This is a fish hunting technique used by dolphins called fish kicking or fish whacking,” McCarthy told Storyful.

McCarthy, who recorded the clip while he was kayaking, said “about 70 percent of their ‘kicks’ were a solid hit and would send the fish flying through the air.” Credit: Michael McCarthy via Storyful
