Flood alert remains in place as more heavy rain expected

A flood alert remains in place for parts of Norfolk after recent torrential downpours.

On Sunday the Environment Agency issued a flood alert for the Hundred Foot Washes, also known as the Ouse Washes, in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.

An update at 8.30am on Monday stated that the alert will remain in place today.

The alert reads: "River levels are rising steadily in response to recent heavy rainfall. Flooding is possible.

"Further rainfall is expected over the next 12 hours which will keep river levels high.

"Take care on riverside roads and footpaths and don't put yourself in unnecessary danger. We are monitoring the situation."

On Sunday flooding was reported at the Honingham turn-off on the A47 and Fen Road in Scarning, both near Dereham.

According to the Met Office more heavy rain and the "odd rumble of thunder" is expected to hit Norfolk today.

A spokesman for the Met Office said Monday will start off mainly dry and bright, but scattered showers will develop throughout the day.

"The showers will be heavy in place and perhaps with the odd rumble of thunder," the spokesman added.
