Flying R2-D2 Drone Delights Sci-Fi Fans At Comic-Con

Star Wars fans at Comic-Con were baffled when they saw R2-D2 soaring across the San Diego skyline, but the flying droid turned out to be a drone.

The pint-sized droid from the Star Wars films was in fact the handy work of Otto Dieffenbach, 62, who runs a company creating custom flying figures.

Dieffenbach also had help from Stephen Amor from Cornwall who provided special firmware for the unmanned drone.

The flights occurred over two days at Comic-Con International 2015 and were greeted with screams of enthusiasm by science-fiction fans.

Otto said: We kept hearing people saying the same things, that it was awesome and amazing.

“There was a lot of shouting and pointing during the flights. Some fans just laughed.

"Earlier in the year I saw the trailer for the movie and decided I needed to build something to fly at Comic-Con. R2-D2 has always been one of my personal favourites.”
